Brooklyn, NY - After a tough game last night against New Jersey, the Cape Cod Bluefins really fought hard all night and came away with a 5 to 4 win in overtime against the Brooklyn Aviators. Captain Anthony Sarno came through with the winner in overtime with an absolute blast from in front to beat Brooklyn goaltender Tommy Lee to provide the margin of victory.

"The guys came together after last night and we had a meeting today and really came out fighting hard, playing spirited hockey all night. Anthony Sarno provided great leadership tonight logging over 40 minutes on the ice and showing the mental toughness he possesses, keeping the team battling all night and ultimately scoring the game winner." Team President Brian Kolb said after the game.

Brooklyn came out early with a goal by Jordan Bernier at the 4:16 mark. Roughly 12 minutes later, newly acquired Bluefin Kevin McCready tied the score at 1 on assists from JD and Dan Gordon to wrap up the 1st period. Brooklyn forward Vladimir Nikiforov scored his first 2 goals 3:19 apart during the middle of the 2nd period, one a shorthanded goal to give Brooklyn a 3 to 1 lead, before Garrett Peters scored a couple minutes later on assists from Augie DiMarzo and Kevin Matheson on the power play to end the 2nd period down 3 to 2 despite out shooting Brooklyn 22 to 19 through 2 periods.

One of the turning points of the game was when Brooklyn forward Casey Mignone took a 5 minute major penalty for cross checking Bluefins forward Brad Surdam. During the ensuing power play, a turnover led to Nikiforov's 2nd shorthanded goal and 3rd of the night on an excellent centering pass from Jesse Felten to make it 4 to 2 in favor of Brooklyn.

Cape Cod had been struggling to start the young season during the 3rd period, but they busted out of it tonight first when Dan Gordon scored his 2nd goal of the season 1:32 after Nikiforov's goal to bring Cape Cod back to within one on the power play with 7:09 left in regulation for Cape Cod's first 3rd period goal of the season.

Cape Cod pulled starting goaltender Chris Testa with just over a minute to play and it paid off as a late rush with 49 seconds left turned into a Brad Surdam goal to tie the score on assists from Corey Bellamy and David Lun with the extra attacker on the ice. Regulation ended with both teams earning a point in the standings with a score tied at 4.

During the 3 on 3 overtime, both team fought hard for that extra pount, with Testa and Brooklyn goaltender Tommy Lee playing very solid. Two minutes and 38 seconds into overtime, Bluefins Captain and Sarno took a pass from Dan Gordon and beat Lee to end the game and give Cape Cod the extra point in the standings with a 5 to 4 overtime win, their second overtime win against Brooklyn in as many games. Chris Testa played solid in goal tonight, stopping 26 pucks. Anthony Sarno rightly earned the 1st star of the game, with Dan Gordon garnering the 3rd star.

Cape Cod comes home to Hyannis Youth and Community Center for home games on Friday and Saturday night against Brooklyn and New Jersey, respectively. Both games start at 7pm. On Saturday, the U.S. Honor Flag makes an appearance at the HYCC for the game against New Jersey. Great seats are still available.
