Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, VA - The D-Braves and P-Rays traded runs in the first, third, and eighth innings, however, it was not enough as Princeton edged Danville 4-3. Starter Matt Withrow went four innings only allowing three hits and two earned runs, while also striking out three batters. Reliever Dakota Dill picked up his second loss of the season, as he went two innings, giving up a pair of hits and a run.
The Princeton Rays would get the scoring started when Rays' center fielder Zac Law homered to left field to give the Rays an early 1-0 lead. The Braves, however, would answer in the bottom half of the first inning. Braves center fielder Ray Didder would lead things off with a triple down the left field line. Luke Dykstra would then come to the plate and send a deep sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Didder to tie the score at 1-1.
Princeton would score again in the top of the third inning. Rays shortstop, Peter Maris, would send a lead-off single to right field and was later advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Law. With Maris on second, Rays first baseman Kewby Meyer drove singled to right and scored Maris to give the Rays a 2-1 lead. The Braves would answer back yet again in the bottom half of the third inning, when Braves competitive balanced first round pick Austin Riley unloaded on a 3-0 fastball to deep centerfield, measuring 425 feet on the solo blast to tie the game back at 2-2.
Princeton would add a run in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Rays second baseman Blake Butera would walk to lead off the inning. Third baseman Bill Pujols would then single to left, advancing Butera to second. Maris would then bunt to advance both runners into scoring position with only one out. Law would then continue to hurt the D-Braves as he grounded out to third baseman Riley, scoring Butera on the play to make the score 3-2 Rays.
The Braves and Rays would trade runs again in the eighth inning. Law would walk to lead things off in the top of the eighth for the Rays, and would then steal second base. Meyer would then reach on an error by Braves first baseman Juan Yepez, allowing Law to score to make it a 4-2 Rays' lead. The Braves would get a run back in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Riley continued his hot hitting singling to left field to put the Braves in business early. Braves short stop Kurt Hoekstra then doubled home riley to narrow the gap to 4-3.
The Braves had a chance to tie, and or walk off with a win in the bottom of the ninth inning. Braves catcher Carlos Martinez would walk to lead off the inning. Recent Gulf Coast League call up Justin Ellison would then single to left field, putting the tying and go ahead runs on base for the Braves. Didder would then attempt to advance both runners on a sacrifice bunt, however, Didder would pop up the bunt attempt to the catcher. Luke Dykstra would then step up with runners on first and second and ground into a game ending 6-4-3 double play.
The Braves will return to action tomorrow as they host the P-Rays for game two of the three game series. Game time is set for 7 pm, on the mound for Danville will be right hander Ryan Clark, and on the rubber for the Rays will be right hander Ethan Clark.
