Danville Otterbots News Release
Princeton, WV - The Danville Braves lost for the second consecutive night on Wednesday. The D-Braves fell to the Princeton Rays in the first game of the three game series, 5-4. Danville attempted a ninth inning comeback but fell one run short. They were tied with the Rays, but the loss dropped them to third in the Appalachian League East standings.
Danville got themselves on the board first in a series that may control the playoff hopes for both teams. Sam Munson singled in the second inning and was able to advance to third on Kenny Fleming's third double of the year. Chad Comer grounded out to short, but Munson made it home to give the D-Braves an early 1-0 lead.
The Braves were able to come away with another run in the third inning. Elmer Reyes led off the inning with a single to center field. Brandon Drury followed with an RBI double to left. Chase Larsson was able to single on the next play advancing Drury to third, but that was all the runs the D-Braves could get. Danville went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position in Wednesday night's loss.
Danville's starter, David Filak, was lights out until the Rays got to him in the home half of the fourth. Cameron Seitzer singled before Junior Rodriguez doubled to right moving Seitzer to third. A single on the next play by Joel Caminero, who leads the team in batting average at .358, scored Seitzer. The Rays cut their deficit to one run.
Princeton really did their damage in the fifth off of Filak. The Rays had runners on first and second with one out when Jake Hager hit a line drive double to right field scoring two runs and giving them a 3-2 lead. Drew Vettleson followed that with his fourth triple of the season scoring Hager. It was Vettleson's 32nd run batted in of 2011. Junior Rodriguez's single later in the inning scored Vettleson and gave the Rays a comfortable 5-2 lead.
The Rays rode that score all the way into the top of the ninth. Brandon Henderson came back out for his fourth inning of work. Sam Munson came to the plate with two runners on and two outs and doubled to centerfield. His hit scored Brandon Drury and Edison Sanchez, but he was thrown out at third base trying to stretch his double into a triple. That was the third and final out of the inning and game. Henderson received his second save of the year for his four innings pitched.
Matt Spann pitched five innings for the Rays; he earned his third win of the year. Spann was responsible for nine hits allowed and two earned runs. David Filak pitched four and two-thirds and was saddled with his fourth loss of the season. He is still searching for his first win in a Danville uniform this year.
Game two of the series is tomorrow before the D-Braves return home on August 6 when the Bristol White Sox come to town. Danville is 0-3 against the Rays this season.
