Princeton, WV - The Braves took care of the Princeton Rays on Thursday night in convincing fashion. Their 10-1 victory tied up the teams once again in the Appy League East division. The Braves were able to score ten runs on nine hits and JR Graham had his best start of the season.
Edison Sanchez got the run scoring started for Danville in the very first inning of Thursday night's contest. After Chase Larsson was hit by a pitch by Princeton starter, Ian Kendall, Sanchez tripled to centerfield giving the Braves a 1-0 lead. Sanchez extended his hitting streak to nine games. During the streak he has three multi-hit games and has raised his average from .250 to .299.
After scoring one more in the second inning off a Kenny Fleming single, the D-Braves added four more runs in the fourth inning. Back-to-back walks followed by a Kurt Fleming single loaded the bags with no one out in the fourth. Fernando De Los Santos came up and hit a bases clearing double. The Braves had a 5-0 lead and De Los Santos had two doubles. His hit prompted a pitching change and Marcus Jensen replaced Kendall. De Los Santos scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
Jensen was replaced by Pedro Silvestre to start the sixth inning and Silvestre immediately gave up a triple to Kurt Fleming. Fleming also scored on a wild pitch that allowed De Los Santos to advance to first on a drop third strike. Kurt's brother, Kenny, doubled to move De Los Santos over to third, and he was brought home on a Brandon Drury single. The Braves led 8-0 after five and a half.
JR Graham pitched through the sixth but was replaced by Wilson Rivera to start the seventh. Rivera let up the only run of the night for Princeton in that inning. Graham went six strong innings, giving up just three hits all night while striking out two. At one point, Graham retired ten Princeton batter in a row. He earned his third victory of the year.
The Braves added two more runs in the eighth inning to push them into double digits in runs. De Los Santos scored his fourth run of the night on a fielder's choice and Kenny Fleming scored later when Kirk Walker grounded into a double play. De Los Santos finished the night going 2-for-3 with four runs scored and three runs batted in, he also walked.
Rivera pitched the seventh and eighth frames giving up the one run while striking out four batters. He was able to lower his earned run average to 1.10. Joe Lucas pitched the ninth inning. He gave up one hit and struck out one batter. The Braves and Rays are now tied with a 23-20 record.
The rubber game of the three game set is tomorrow night at 7:00 pm. The Braves will look to finish out the nine game road trip with a 6-3 record. The team returns home on August 6 when the Bristol White Sox come to town. Danville is 0-3 against the Rays this season.
