GRAND ISLAND, NE - Nebraska's quick start was just what the doctor ordered on Friday night. And, after that, they decided to open the flood gates.
The Danger used a big start from their offense and defense to score the first 21 points against Tri-Cities and then went into cruise control as they defeated the Fever 77-46 at the Heartland Events Center on Friday night. They scored in every phase as Troy Evans added a kickoff return in the second half.
"After last week, we'll take that start," Nebraska coach Mike Davis said. "It's really tough in our league to come back when you get up on a team by three scores. You just really have to manage the game and force the opponent out of their comfort zone."
"I was really pleased with how we played early tonight. Tri-Cities is a good team; it was nice to get them in a hole early."
For the second straight week, Aronde Stanton affected a field goal that turned the Danger's fortunes. He disrupted Brady Beeson's attempt on the Fever's first possession and it went wide right.
After that, Nebraska took over.
They opened the scoring on a pair of passes from Jameel Sewell to Andre Piper-Jordan. The first one from 30 yards and the second - after the Danger turned over Tri-Cities on downs - came from 20 yards as he went over the dasher boards for a 14-0 lead.
On Tri-Cities' next possession, defensive back Jamar Love picked off a Dante Warren pass and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 Danger lead with 2:26 left in the first quarter. The Danger defense pitched a shutout in the first quarter for the second straight game.
"We were clicking in all phases early tonight," Davis said. "Jamar made a great play on that interception. Any time you can get a defensive score in our league, it's huge. We seem to be getting better each week on defense which is good to see."
Piper-Jordan, playing against his old team, had a heyday. He tied a franchise record with four receiving touchdowns, the last one giving the Danger a 64-48 lead with 8:44 left in the game.
Nebraska was equally good on defense, causing problems for the Fever offense all night. They picked off Warren three times, sacked him six and the Danger also recovered a Tri-Cities fumble. In the fourth quarter, Love returned another interception 40 yards for a score.
Nebraska (3-1) will play their second road game of the season next Saturday at Bemidji. The Fever dropped to 1-2 and will play at Cedar Rapids next week.
