NEW YORK, March 24, 2008 - Carlos Powell of the Dakota Wizards today was named D-League.com Performer of the Week for games played during the week of March 17. Powell averaged 31.0 points, 7.7 assists and 4.7 rebounds as the Wizards went 2-1 on the week. Powell is the first player to earn the honor twice this season, as he was previously named D-League.com Performer of the Week on Feb. 4.
A University of South Carolina product, Powell's best game of the week came on Friday in a win over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, when he led all scorers and tied his season high with 37 points, on 13-of-16 shooting from the floor and 9-of-10 from the free throw line, to go with seven assists and five rebounds. On Sunday, in the weekend's second match-up between the Wizards and the Mad Ants, Powell tied his season-high with 12 assists.
This season, Powell is averaging 22.2 points (fifth in the D-League), to go with 6.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 41 games for the Central Division leading Dakota Wizards. His 39.4 minutes per game ranks him second in the league.
Other top performers in the D-League last week included Los Angeles' Sean Banks, who averaged 25.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in two games; Iowa's Shannon Brown, who averaged 28.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in four games while on assignment from the Chicago Bulls; Earl Calloway, who averaged 26.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists in three games for Fort Wayne; Bakersfield's Mateen Cleaves, who averaged 29.0 points, 9.0 assists and 6.5 rebounds, while shooting 21-of-29 from the field; and Alando Tucker, who averaged 32.2 points and 4.3 rebounds, while shooting 11-of-22 from three-point range in two games for Albuquerque while on assignment from the Phoenix Suns.
