D-Jays win shortened Game 1; Game 2 killed Short but strong storm ends first game prematurely, cancels second game

The rain that has pounded Dunedin Stadium over the last three days finally became too much for the field and the two teams playing on it.

With the entire doubleheader in jeopardy of being called off before the first game, the two teams started off with the best intentions of completing what they set out to do: Finish a game at Dunedin Stadium on Thursday night.

Thanks to a short but strong rainstorm a lot like the one that cancelled Tuesday night's game, a rain delay halted play in the bottom of the fifth inning with Dunedin leading 5-4. After the field was determined to be unplayable, play was stopped for the evening, give the Blue Jays their victory by the same score.

During the four game series, only two games got completed, with Monday's 5-2 win by St. Lucie being the only game of the four to go the full nine innings.

The two teams will not play each other the rest of the season, and no make-up dates have been announced for either Tuesday's contest of tonight's contest that have been lost to the schedule.

Dunedin's Jesus Gonzalez went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, including a 2-run homer in the second inning. Matt Liuzza reached base all three times he saw home plate, walking twice and driving in a run with an RBI double in Dunedin's three run fourth innings.

St. Lucie got two run homers from Zack Lutz and Francisco Pena to give them the lead at 4-2 after the top of the fourth, but Dunedin got three in the bottom frame with Liuzza's double, Gonzalez's single, and a go-ahead RBI double from Adam Loewen.

Dumas Garcia (3-0) picked up the win with 1.1 innings of shutout relief, including two strikeouts.

Dunedin plays a home-and-home series with the Clearwater Threshers beginning Friday night in Clearwater. They will then come home on Saturday, the 4th of July, to play host to their rivals in a special 11 a.m. matinee.
