D-Fenders Start 2-0, Defeat Warriors in Home Opener

EL SEGUNDO - The D-Fenders beat the Santa Cruz Warriors 104-101 tonight in El Segundo.

Vander Blue and Manny Harris led the D-Fenders (2-0) with 23 points apiece. Zach Andrews (14 points, four rebounds), Andre Ingram (13 points), and Justin Hawkins (13 points, five rebounds) all scored in double-figures for the D-Fenders, while Josh Magette dished out 12 assists.

Elliot Williams (31 points, nine rebounds) paced the Warriors (1-1), while Darington Hobson (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Anthony Vereen (11 points) each scored in double digits for Santa Cruz.

Blue came out firing for Los Angeles, tallying 11 points (4/6 FGA) in the first quarter. Williams matched Blue's total with 11 points of his own, leaving the teams knotted up at 28 after one. Andre Ingram provided a spark for the D-Fenders in the second quarter, contributing eight points off the bench, while Hawkins added eight of his own for Los Angeles. Santa Cruz, led by Hobson with eight points, was outscored 28-21 in the quarter, and trailed 56-49 at the halftime break. Blue led all scorers with 14 points in the first half, followed by Williams with 13 points for Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz found their rhythm in the third quarter, shooting .556 from the field, outscoring Los Angeles 26-20. Williams scored 13 points in the quarter for the Warriors. The D-Fenders took a 76-75 lead into the fourth quarter, Blue leading the way with 16 points. The fourth quarter was back-and-fourth, with Los Angeles edging out the Warriors 28-26 for the quarter. Harris scored 14 points in the fourth, to push the D-Fenders past the Warriors 104-101.

The D-Fenders shot .451 from the field, compared to .500 for the Warriors. Los Angeles hit 28-of-32 free throws, while Santa Cruz tallied 20-of-30. The D-Fenders recorded 15 steals and handed out 21 assists. Los Angeles turned the ball over 14 times, compared to 24 for Santa Cruz.

Los Angeles heads to Bakersfield, CA on Tuesday, November 17 to face the Bakersfield Jam at 7:00pm PT.
