EL SEGUNDO - The Los Angeles D-Fenders bested the Austin Toros 95-91 at Toyota Sports Center on Saturday night, winning for the fourth time in the last five games.
Both teams started the game slowly, each finishing the first quarter shooting under 42 percent as Los Angeles (17-20) trailed 23-20. However, the D-Fenders gained some separation in the second quarter, outscoring the Toros 32-23 after forcing six turnovers and allowing just a 32 percent field goal clip to take a 52-46 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the D-Fenders built upon their first half momentum to gain the largest lead of the contest for either team (10 points) and stayed up 71-67 through 36 minutes of action. With six lead changes and two ties in the final quarter alone, the game seesawed back and forth late but ultimately ended in the D-Fenders favor.
Los Angeles Lakers assignee Darius Morris (game-high 21 points, 6 rebounds), Lazar Hayward (20 points, 6 rebounds), Elijah Millsap (18 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals) and Courtney Fortson (14 points, 7 assists) all finished in double-figures for the D-Fenders. Additionally, Lakers assignee Robert Sacre contributed a team-high 10 rebounds and game-high three blocks to go along with six points in the victory.
Austin (22-16) had two players earn double-doubles, guided by JaMychal Green (20 points, 14 rebounds) and Rick Jackson (11 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks). Tre Kelley also scored 11 points while Tyler Wilkerson and Chris Roberts pitched in 10 points apiece for the Toros - a team that had won seven of nine contests before tonight.
The D-Fenders tied a season-low for turnovers tonight with 10, shot 40 percent from the floor pulled down 38 rebounds while the Toros registered 20 turnovers, shot 38.9 percent from the field and grabbed 56 boards.
On Monday, Mar. 11 the Los Angeles and Austin (NBA Affiliate: San Antonio Spurs) will square off once again at Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo. Game time is set for 6:30 pm.
