WASHINGTON, DC - D.C. United have acquired up to $900,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) from the Vancouver Whitecaps in exchange for wingback Julian Gressel. The Black-and-Red will receive $400,000 in 2022 GAM, $200,000 in 2023 GAM, and an additional $300,000 in 2024 GAM if Gressel makes three MLS appearances between 2022 and 2023.
"Under our new Head Coach Wayne Rooney, we expect to adjust our tactical shape" Dave Kasper, D.C. United President of Soccer Operations, said. "We are focused on bringing in players that fit this new system of play and can help Wayne achieve his on-field vision. We'd like to thank Julian for his incredible service to the club since he joined us from Atlanta in 2020 and wish him all of the best in Vancouver."
In 2022, Gressel recorded seven assists in 17 MLS appearances (16 starts) for the Black-and-Red. He last appeared for the club in the loss against the Philadelphia Union on July 8 at Subaru Park.
"The value of the offer from Vancouver is one that gives us the flexibility to reshape our roster based on the changes in style that Wayne wants to implement," Lucy Rushton, D.C. United General Manager, said. "We wish Julian luck in the next chapter of his career in Vancouver."
Julian Gressel joined D.C. United on Jan. 21, 2020 from Atlanta United. The German made his debut for the Black-and-Red on Feb. 29, 2020 against the Colorado Rapids at Audi Field. In three seasons, Gressel scored four goals and recorded 23 assists in 73 MLS appearances. He scored his first goal for the club against the Philadelphia Union on Aug. 29, 2020.
Transaction: D.C. United acquired $400,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM), $200,000 in 2023 GAM, and an additional $300,000 in 2024 GAM if Gressel makes three MLS appearances between 2022 and 2023, from the Vancouver Whitecaps in exchange for wingback Julian Gressel.
