D.C. United News Release
WASHINGTON - D.C. United have acquired Columbus Crew forward Miguel Berry in exchange for $225,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM); $125,000 in 2022 GAM and $100,000 in 2023 GAM. In addition, Columbus will retain a portion of any future trade fee within MLS and receive up to $100,000 in additional GAM if Berry meets certain performance-based incentives.
"Miguel has shown his talent and his ability to be a top finisher in this league over the past two seasons and we are excited to see him continue to develop under Wayne," Lucy Rushton, D.C. United General Manager, said. "His size, athleticism and goal-scoring ability will be a great addition to the roster as we head into a critical point in the season. We welcome him to the Club and are looking forward to integrating him with the roster."
In 2022, Berry scored two goals in 16 MLS appearances (13 starts) for the Crew. He scored his first goal of the season in the opening match of the year on Feb. 26 in a 4-0 win against the Vancouver Whitecaps. The 24-year-old scored his second goal of the season on May 7 in the 2-2 draw on the road against the New England Revolution.
Berry was selected 7th overall in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft by the Columbus Crew on Jan. 9, 2020, after an impressive four years at the University of San Diego. In his first season with Columbus, Berry was loaned to San Diego Loyal in the USL Championship on Aug. 28, 2020. In six appearances for San Diego that season, Berry scored two goals and recorded two assists before his loan concluded on Nov. 30, 2020.
In 2021, Berry made his debut for the Columbus Crew in a 1-0 win in the second leg of the last 16 match against Nicaraguan club Real Eselí FC in CONCACAF Champions League on April 16. The forward then made his MLS debut for the Crew as an 89th-minute substitute against Toronto FC on May 12. Berry then returned to San Diego Loyal on loan on May 28, 2021 and scored three goals and recorded one assist in seven league appearances that year. Berry returned from his loan on July 3. Berry had a breakout season in 2021 for Columbus, scoring eight goals and recording two assists in 18 appearances (nine starts).
Berry spent four years of collegiate soccer at the University of San Diego of the National College Athletics Association (NCAA) from 2016 to 2019. The Spanish native scored 38 goals and recorded 16 assists in 72 appearances (69 starts) for the Toreros. In his final collegiate season in 2019, Berry earned an All-American selection, was the WCC CoPlayer of the Year, and was a 2019 MAC Hermann National Player of the Year Semifinalist.
