Sporting Kansas City News Release

Kansas City, MO - The Kansas City Wizards fought hard, outshooting D.C. United 10-2 in the second half, but a two-goal first half deficit was too big to overcome and they fell 3-1 in a battle for first place in the Eastern Conference. United increased its lead in the East to five points with the win.

It didn't take much time for the match to get exciting, less than two minutes in Jaime Moreno snuck in behind the Wizards defense by the slimmest of margins on Christian Gomez' looping set piece from the right side and redirected the ball inside the near post, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Moreno gave D.C. a 2-0 lead when he converted a penalty kick after Clyde Simms tripped over the ball in the box near the 18th minute. Running into the Wizards' 18-yard box on a through ball, Simms fell when he attempted a shot with Davy Arnaud trailing. Referee Terry Vaughan felt Arnaud made contact, to which he and goalkeeper Bo Oshoniy adamantly protested, and gave United its second PK in as many games against Kansas City. Oshoniyi was awarded a yellow card for dissent prior to the penalty shot.

Scott Sealy closed the gap to 2-1 in the 26th minute with his first tally of the season, pouncing on a Sasha Victorine rebound. Victorine picked up the ball in the 6-yard box and hammered shot that was stopped in the goalmouth by Freddy Adu. With the rebound right at his feet Sealy blew up the net to bring KC within one.

D.C. built the lead back to two at 3-1, once again on a set piece from the right side, except this time it was Freddy Adu who hit the free kick. Adu stepped to the ball and curled in a driving left-footed cross towards the back post that Bobby Boswell got behind of and headed into the top left corner.
