D-Backs Pick Trahan with First Pick in 2012 MLB Draft

MISSOULA, MONT. - The Arizona Diamondbacks have selected high school catcher Stryker Trahan with their first pick in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft on Monday.
Trahan, out of Acadiana High School out of Louisiana, was regarded as the top high school catcher, and in the top three backstops available in the draft. The D-backs have had an eye on Trahan since last spring, and saw enough in his development to make him their first-round pick.
Trahan, a left-handed hitter who signed a NCAA National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Mississippi, has strong hands, a solid swing and a 6-foot-1, 220-pound frame which fits a catcher. Some scouts believe, though, that Trahan is destined to become a corner outfielder. Even then, though, his bat may be good enough to make that move and still have him be an everyday player, because in part of his athletic ability.
However, the D-backs front office believes that Trahan will be a backstop in the future.
"He's a good athlete," said Diamondbacks Director of Scouting Ray Montgomery. "He can run, he can throw obviously, he's going to have to do some work back there, but with the bat profile where it is, the position that he plays, and the fact that he hits left-handed, he's a pretty good package, and we're happy to get him with the 26th pick."
The draft continues with Rounds 2-15 taking place on Tuesday, and Rounds 16-40 on Wednesday.
