Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
The Cyclones (1-0) used strong pitching and timely hitting in a 6-2 victory to beat the rival Staten Island Yankees (0-1) on Opening Day in front of a crowd of 9,284. The Cyclones were hitless through two innings and trailed 1-0, but in the third inning they capitalized with key hits to take a 3-1 lead.
Starting pitcher Collin McHugh picked up the first win of the season on Friday night -- coincidentally, on his 22nd birthday. He allowed five hits and two runs (both earned) in 5.0 innings of work. Staten Island scored their second run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. McHugh recorded five strikeouts and walked three batters.
Matias Carrillo relieved McHugh in the sixth inning and surrendered only one hit in 3.0 innings of work and recorded three strikeouts. Mike Powers surrendered one hit in an otherwise perfect relief effort in the ninth inning in a non-save situation.
John Servidio led off the fifth inning with the first Cyclones home run of the '09 season, and Brooklyn got the bulk of its offense from catcher Juan Centeno and his three hits. In the fifth inning Centeno tripled to score Seth Williams to put the Cyclones ahead 5-2 and in the eighth inning Centeno singled with two outs to score Luis Rivera. Centeno finished the night 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Matt Bouchard and Nick Giarraputo also had RBI in the 6-2 win over Staten Island. In total the Cyclones scored six runs on nine hits and committed one error. They had one home run and one triple. The Cyclones travel to Staten Island on Saturday, before returning to Brooklyn for the team's next home game on Father's Day, Sunday, June 21st, when the Cyclones again take on the Yankees, with the first pitch at 5pm. The Cyclones will host a Father's Day celebration with a pre-game catch, and kids can run the bases after the game. In addition, the first 2,500 fans will receive a Bucket Cap, courtesy of T's Me.
