LOWELL, MA ---The Lowell Spinners rallied from a 6-3 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and five more runs in the seventh to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 10-6 in the New York-Penn League season opener for both teams Friday night at LeLecheur Park.

Vermont trailed 3-1 when they scored five runs on four hits in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Sean Nicol led off the fourth with a double, while J.P. Ramirez followed with a single and J.R. Higley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jack Walker then tied the game with a two-run double to left and Justin Bloxom's RBI groundout gave the Lake Monsters a 4-3 lead.

Ronnie LaBrie then belted the next pitch from Spinners starter Yeiper Castillo over the fence in leftfield for the 6-3 Vermont lead. But after the LaBrie home run, the Lake Monsters would have their next 12 batters retired in order and not get another hit in the game until a one-out infield single in the ninth from LaBrie.

Vermont starter Graham Hicks allowed three runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts over the first five innings. All three runs came in the third, including a two-run homer from Roberto Feliz, that gave Lowell a then 3-1 lead.

Trailing 6-3, the Spinners got their rally started in the sixth inning as they scored two unearned runs off Vermont reliever Federico Tanco. After scoring runs on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly, Lowell had the bases loaded with two outs when Clayton Dill came on to retire Yamaico Navarro on a popout to end the threat.

But the Spinners would get to Dill in the seventh inning as they scored five runs on five hits, including an RBI double by Wilfred Pichardo and RBI triple from Derrik Gibson to take a 10-6 lead. Three Lowell relievers combined to allow just one hit over five scoreless innings with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Meanwhile Vermont relievers Tanco and Gill combined to allow seven runs on six hits in three innings of relief, though five of the seven runs were unearned due to a fielding error in both the sixth and seventh innings. For the game, the Lake Monsters defense committed four errors overall.

LaBrie went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and the two RBI on the first Lake Monsters home run of the season, while Feliz was 2-for-5 with two runs and the two-run homer for the Spinners.

Vermont and Lowell will face off in the second game of the three-game series at 5:05 pm with Juan Jaime scheduled to make the start for the Lake Monsters.
