CyberRays captain Brandi Chastain called to national team for World Cup qualifying

SAN JOSE (Oct. 16, 2002) – San Jose CyberRays captain Brandi Chastain has been called up to the U.S. Women's National Team for the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, the North American qualifying tournament for next year's Women's World Cup.

Chastain, 34, a defender, has represented the United States in 153 international matches and scored the game-winning goal against China in the 1999 Women's World Cup final played at the Rose Bowl.

The United States is one of eight teams from CONCACAF's North American region that will compete in the Gold Cup, beginning Oct. 27. Two teams will qualify from the tournament for the World Cup, to be played Sept. 24-Oct. 11, 2003 in China.

The United States has been placed in Group 1 of the Gold Cup along with Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and Panama. The group will play a round-robin schedule at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., Fullerton, Calif., and Seattle with the top two teams advancing to the semifinals. The final will be played Nov. 9 at the Rose Bowl.
