
Three San Diego Spirit Players Named to U.S. Gold Cup Roster

SAN DIEGO - Forward Shannon MacMillan, midfielder Julie Foudy and defender Joy Fawcett have been named to the 18-player U.S. Women's National Team roster by head coach April Heinrichs for the 2002 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, which will serve as the regional qualification tournament for the 2003 Women's World Cup in China. The USA, which begins Gold Cup play on October 27 against Mexico at the Rose Bowl, commences training camp at the ARCO U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. on Monday, October 21.

Foudy, the national team captain, has made 215 appearances for the United States and has scored 39 goals. MacMillan, who has 141 career caps and 48 goals, is the leading scorer for the USA this year, pounding in 13 goals in 14 games. Fawcett, the all-time leading scorer among defenders in U.S. National Team history with 26 goals, is two caps shy of 200 career appearances with the U.S. National Team. She should earn her historic 200th cap on October 29 against Trinidad & Tobago at Titan Stadium in Fullerton, Calif. Fawcett and Foudy are competing in their third World Cup qualifying tournaments (1991 and 1994), while all three were members of the 1999 Women's World Cup championship team.
The USA, which has been placed in Group 1 with Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and Panama, needs to advance to the championship game on November 9 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. to earn one of the two automatic berths afforded to the CONCACAF region. The U.S. will be training daily at the ARCO U.S. Olympic Training Center beginning Monday. A complete training schedule will be released shortly.
