Cutters' Playoff Run Ends in 7-5 Defeat
September 10, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters season came to an end on Saturday night, as they were defeated 7-5 by the Worcester Tornadoes at Yale Field. The Tornadoes won the South Division series three games to one, taking three straight from the Cutters after an opening the playoffs with a loss.
Both teams got off to a fast start. The Tornadoes scored two runs in the top of the first off Cutters starter Jarrett Stawarz, but the lead was short lived as the Cutters struck back for three in the home half. Jeff Brooks ripped a double off of Mike Cox into left-centerfield with the bases loaded to clear the bases.
Stawarz seemed to be on cruise control after the shaky first inning, retiring seven batters in a row. Zach Strong put an end to that streak by launching a towering solo home run in the top of the fourth. It was his second blast of the series. Two more runs would cross the plate that inning on a Josh Beauregard single and the Cutters lead was quickly turned into a one-run deficit.
The following inning, Stawarz would only retire one batter. He was relieved by Mark Comolli after loading the bases. Comolli, trying his best to limit the damage, allowed just one of the inherited runners to score, bringing the score to 6-4.
Cox was removed from the game following the third inning. In his stead came Eddie Pena (1-0), who pitched two and two-thirds of one run ball to earn the victory. David Byard came on in the ninth, after Greg Montalbano had pitched a scoreless two and one-third innings, to earn his second save of the playoffs.
The Cutters scored in the sixth to make it 7-5 and brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings. In the final frame, Keto Anderson singled with one out off of Byard. But Chas Terni and Derrick Gibson were unable to force the game into extra innings, as they fouled out to third and struck out, respectively.
There were 25 strikeouts combined on the night, with the Cutters fanning on 14 occasions and the Tornadoes failing to make contact 11 times.
Stawarz (0-1) tossed four and one-third innings, giving up six runs on nine hits. He struck out six and walked three in a losing effort.
The offense was led by Brooks. In addition to his three-run double, he had a run scoring single in the third. Bill Peavey added a pair of hits and scored twice.
Worcester will now face Les Quebec Capitales in the Can-Am League championship series starting Tuesday. Quebec completed their sweep of Brockton on Saturday night with a 13-5 win.
