New Haven County Cutters News Release
Derrick Gibson, a hard-hitting outfielder with vast Triple-A experience plus 17 games for the Colorado Rockies between 1998 and 1999, has been signed by the New Haven County Cutters. This season Gibson spent time between Mississippi and Richmond, the Atlanta Braves' Class AA and AAA affiliates before joining the Cutters.
This will be Gibson's second tour of duty at Yale Field. While playing for the New Haven Ravens he put up near Triple Crown numbers in 1997, batting .317 with 23 home runs and 75 RBIs. He was named to the Eastern League All-Star team. He had 15 homers and 65 RBIs in New Haven in 1996.
Gibson brings with him 12 years of professional experience.
"With Derrick's arrival and the expected return of Darren Ciraco from injury, we will have what we expect to be a solid batting order from top to bottom," Director of Player Procurement Bob Wirz said. "The experience we have added recently with Gibson, Mike O'Keefe and Vinny Esposito gives us a tremendous boost in experience and a good balance between left and right-handed hitting."
Prior to this season, the 6-2, 240-pound right-hander had a career minor league batting average of .279 to go with 185 home runs and 764 RBIs. During his time with the Rockies he batted .286 and had a pair of home runs to go along with eight RBIs.
Gibson will be joining the team in Boston and will be in uniform when the Cutters begin their series at North Shore on Tuesday.
The Cutters next homestand begins June 13 at 7:05 against Worcester. Tickets can be purchased online at www.CuttersBaseball.com, by calling 203-777-5636 or by stopping by the Yale Field box office.
