Can-Am Canadian American League

Spirit sweep weekly awards

June 6, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

North Shore 1B Travis Oglesby and RHP Ken Ray were chosen by SportsTicker, the Can-Am League's official statistician, as Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 30-June 6.

Oglesby went 7-for-14 with three home runs, eight runs scored and eight RBI as the Spirit rolled to a 5-2 record for the week. One of the home runs came on Monday, when the Santa Rosa, California, native was 2-for-3 with three runs scored as North Shore defeated Elmira 11-4. His three home runs currently place him in a tie for third place in the league.

Oglesby, 27, was a 25th-round selection of Arizona in the 1999 draft. He spent two years in the Diamondbacks organization, reaching as high as Class A High Desert, before signing with Sonoma County of the Western League for the 2001 season. There, he was third in the league with 21 home runs and fourth with 82 RBI. After one more season in Sonoma, he spent 2003 with Rio Grande Valley and Jackson in the Central League. Last season, his first with the Spirit, Oglesby hit .275 with 64 RBI in 79 games to go along with 18 home runs, third-best in the Northeast League.

Ray was superb in his only outing of the week, keeping Elmira hitless in six innings of work while striking out eight as the Spirit cruised to a 6-0 victory.

The Atlanta native is currently in his twelfth season of professional baseball. After being selected by Kansas City in the eighteenth round of the 1993 draft, he spent seven seasons in the Royals organization, including 13 games in the majors in 1999. Ray, 30, played the 2002 season in the Western and Atlantic Leagues, the 2003 season in the Milwaukee organization, and 2004 in the Chicago White Sox system, where at Class A Winston-Salem he was second in the Carolina League in wins with 12.
