Cutters Grab First Victory
June 3, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
It took eight full games and a little bit extra in the ninth one before the Cutters secured their first victory of 2005, topping the Quebec Les Capitales 4-3 in 10 innings.
A Jeff Brooks ground ball with the bases loaded that was bobbled by Quebec shortstop Lee Delfino allowed Keto Anderson to score the winning run. Anderson had led off the inning with a single, which was followed by an intentional walk to Mike O'Keefe. With runners on first and second with one out, Bill Peavey, the team's leader in RBIs with 10, looked poised to end the game. But he never got the chance as he was plunked in the leg by a pitch from Rick Kirsten, a newly signed Quebec hurler, setting up Brooks' winning play.
Lost in the late inning drama was a stellar pitching performance by the Cutters starter, Tim Keinath. It was easily the most impressive outing of the season for any New Haven County pitcher as he tossed five and one third scoreless innings, allowing only two hits.
The bullpen was once again shaky for the Cutters, giving up three runs in the eighth inning that tied the score facilitated by a botched double play ball by shortstop Chas Terni. But tonight the team was able to stop the bleeding and keep the game within reason during its final stages. For the first time this season, it was the opposing team who made the costly error.
Mike O'Keefe went 2 for 4 and batted in a run and catcher Andy Larned stayed hot, going 2 for 3 and even flashed some speed on the bases by stealing second. Over the past four games Larned has gone 7 for 15 for a .467 average. Nick Rowland pitched a solid two and two thirds innings for the victory.
The Cutters will look to build on tonight's victory when they take on Les Capitales again on Saturday at 7:05. New Haven County will send Jordy Alexander to the mound with Quebec countering with Min Soo Kim.
