Cupido a Finalist for NLL Transition Player of the Year Award
June 17, 2015 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The National Lacrosse League announced on Wednesday that Colorado Mammoth speedster Joey Cupido has been named a finalist for the 2015 NLL Transition Player of the Year award, joining Calgary's Karsen Leung and Toronto's Brodie Merrill.
A fifth-round pick in the NLL Entry Draft (2011), Cupido excelled in 2013 and was named to the NLL All-Rookie Team.
But his breakout campaign was clearly the 2015 season as he led the league with 40 caused turnovers. While officially a defenseman, the man known as 'Lightning' is a frontrunner for the transition award because of his explosive offensive output. He scored 16 goals, twice the total of any other defender. Cupido's 31 points were far and away best among back-end players, and his .372 shooting percentage led the league among all players in double-digit scoring. The 24-year-old netted two hat tricks (single-game career-highs) this season, and forced a career-best seven turnovers in the home opener against the Roughnecks in January.
In May, Cupido was the unanimous selection for the transition player of the year award by IL Indoor, a media leader in lacrosse coverage.
The NLL's official award will be presented in September at the Season Awards Ceremony in Ontario.
