Cubs Win Season Finale, 6-0

The Daytona Cubs (75-64, 41-28) wrapped up the 2010 season with a victory of the Lakeland Flying Tigers (71-67, 34-34) Sunday afternoon 6-0. Robert Whitenack pitched his best game as a D-Cub pitched seven shutout innings. Daytona took their first lead of the season with two runs in the top of the second inning. The rally started with one out as second baseman Jake Opitz and left fielder Greg Rohan reached on back-to-back singles. Center fielder Jose Valdez then doubled down the left field line to score Opitz and Rohan.

The Cubs extended their lead to three with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Shortstop Junior Lake led off the inning with a line drive single to left field and moved to second on a passed ball by Lakeland catcher Bryan Holaday. Third baseman DJ LeMahieu singled up the middle to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Designated hitter Ryan Flaherty took advantage with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Lake and put the Cubs up 3-0.

The D-Cubs would tack on another insurance run in the seventh inning. Jose Valdez added his second double of the season and D.J. LeMahieu delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to extend the D-Cubs lead to 4-0.

The D-Cubs would put the ballgame to rest in the top of the ninth inning with two runs off the Lakeland bullpen to put Daytona up 6-0.

Robert Whitenack (3-1) picked up the victory for Daytona. The loss went to Lakeland starter Mark Sorensen (10-12.

The Cubs finish the season with an overall record of 75-64. Daytona was 34-36 in the first half of the year and finished with a second-half mark of 41-28.
