DAYTONA - The Daytona Cubs (26-32, 60-65) took down the Lakeland Flying Tigers (23-33, 52-69) on Thursday Night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, 8-5. Cubs right fielder Brandon Guyer led the way for Daytona with three RBI, thanks in part to a first inning two-run home run.
The Flying Tigers and Cubs exchanged two-run home runs in the first inning. Right fielder Jeramy Laster went deep for Lakeland, while Brandon Guyer just got one over the wall down the left field line for Daytona. The long ball is Laster's tenth of the season and just the first for Guyer.
Daytona kept the runs coming in the second inning with three off of Lakeland starter Charles Furbush (6-7). Catcher Mark Reed led off with a single and then moved to third on an error by third baseman Joe Tucker. Designated hitter Jericho Jones came through with runners on the corners as he doubled down the right field line to give the Cubs a 3-2 lead. Center fielder Tony Campana then grounded out to bring in the second run of the inning before Nathan Samson lined a single up the middle to score Jones.
Lakeland made it a 5-4 ball game in the top of the fifth inning. After third baseman Joe Tucker was hit by a pitch, shortstop Audy Ciriaco blasted a James Leverton (9-11) offering over the left field wall for his eleventh home run of the year.
The Cubs answered right back with two of their own in the bottom half of the fifth. Samson walked and then moved to second on a single by third baseman Josh Vitters. Both runners moved up 90 feet thanks to a Furbush wild pitch. Guyer then picked up his third RBI of the night with a ground out to Ciriaco that scored Samson. Shortstop Marwin Gonzalez got into the action with a two-out single that brought in Vitters and gave the Cubs a 7-4 lead.
Daytona added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wyatt picked up a one-out single off of Tigers reliever Richard Zumaya. The brother of big leaguer Joel Zumaya then hit Jericho Jones and walked Tony Campana to load the bases. The Cubs best contact hitter, Nathan Samson, came through with a sacrifice fly to left field to push the Daytona lead to four.
