The Chicago Cubs have purchased the contract of Fort Worth Cats' right-handed pitcher Matt Harrington, it was announced today.

Harrington, 24, has spent the last five seasons with the Cats, accumulating an overall record of 16-12. In 2006, he finished the season with a 6-1 record with a 2.90 ERA in 39 appearances out of the Cats' bullpen.

He held American Association hitters to a .211 batting average against, struck out 56 and walked just 23 in 49 2/3 innings pitched. Harrington allowed just one run in five playoff appearances as the Cats won their second consecutive league title in September.

In 2005, Harrington was a perfect 5-0 with a 3.55 ERA in 23 games. He appeared in only seven games in 2004 but appeared in 38 games between 2003 and 2002 for the Cats.

Harrington was signed by the Cats on July 4, 2002 after brief stints with St. Paul in the Northern League and Long Beach in the Western League.

After an outstanding high school career, Harrington was drafted by the Colorado Rockies with the 7th overall pick in 2000. He did not sign with Colorado and was drafted each of the next four years - most recently in 2004 by the Yankees in the 36th round.
