Iowa Cubs News Release

The Fresno Grizzlies scored four runs in the first inning and did not look back in a 9-2 victory over the Iowa Cubs on Thursday night at Principal Park.

The Grizzlies got two-run doubles from Ryan Rohlinger and Eli Whiteside off Iowa starter Mitch Atkins (2-5) in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. Atkins allowed seven runs on six hits and four walks in four innings. He struck out two in front of 7,573 fans.

The Cubs closed the gap to 4-1 in the third inning with a bases-loaded walk by Jason Dubois, but Fresno tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth to claim a comfortable 7-1 lead.

Fresno starter Steve Hammond (2-2) was solid, scattering nine Cubs hits in seven innings while walking four and striking out a pair to earn the win. The Cubs threatened in nearly every inning, but the Fresno southpaw made his best pitches when he had to. The Cubs left nine runners on base and were just 2-for-9 with men in scoring position.

Sam Fuld went 2-for-4 in the losing effort.

The Iowa Cubs and Fresno Grizzlies play game two of this four-game series Friday at Principal Park starting at 7:05 p.m. The game will be followed by post-game fireworks.

Notes: Andres Blanco had a nine-game hitting streak snapped with an 0- for-4 night ... Richie Robnett, who was called up from double-A Tennessee prior to the game, tripled in his Iowa Cubs debut.
