South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: The South Bend Cubs have started their seven game homestand with four straight losses. Tonight, in game one of four between the Cubs and Lake County Captains, South Bend showed a strong fight in the middle innings, but their comeback effort was halted by a large Captains rally. The eventual final score in game one was 9-4.
After jumping out to a quick 3-1 lead after three innings against starter Ryan Williams, the Cubs fired back with two runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Against Captains starter Luis Oviedo, Delvin Zinn picked up his second RBI of the night on a ground ball into left field. Austin Filiere came home to score to tie it at 3-3.
Williams surrendered five runs combined between top of the 5th and 6th innings before departing after 5.1 frames pitched. Overall, the right hander allowed eight runs on the night with all of them being earned. His record drops to 0-2 in four starts in 2018.
Out of the bullpen, Jake Steffens and Garrett Kelly pitched a combined 3.2 innings of one run baseball. Neither of them struck out a batter, but they kept the game close enough for South Bend to have a chance to come back.
At a score of 9-3 in the 7th inning, the Cubs loaded the bases with two outs for Filiere. On a slow dribbler back to the mound, Filiere was thrown out at first by the pitcher at the time Felix Tati. Even though Tati bobbled the ball, he stuck with it to get Filiere by a step. Tati earned the win in four innings of work.
With the loss, the Cubs fall overall to 54-63 on the season, and 20-28 in the second half. The Captains now jump ahead of South Bend in the standings. With game two set for tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 PM, the Cubs will look to respond in a positive way with righty Enrique De Los Rios scheduled to start.
