Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Jordan Verdon prevented a shutout with a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning for the Connecticut Tigers (26-36) in a 12-1 road loss to the Brooklyn Cyclones (35-30) on Friday night at MCU Park.
Cyclones starter Christian James (Win, 4-1) tossed a career-best eight scoreless innings with four strikeouts and no walks. He allowed three Connecticut baserunners on two singles and a hit-by-pitch. The 20-year-old New York Mets prospect lowered his season-long earned run average to 1.76, good for second-best in the New York-Penn League.
The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth against Brooklyn reliever Adam Hill. Verdon drew a five-pitch walk to bring Jose King home from third base on the lone RBI for Connecticut. King reached base twice in the ballgame with a single and a walk to go 4-for-6 at the plate through the first two games of the series in Brooklyn.
Connecticut starter Stevie Ledesma (Loss, 0-2) lasted 3 2/3 innings and allowed five earned runs including a solo home run by Jose Medina in the second. Tigers reliever Victor Mueses replaced Ledesma and gave up five earned runs as the Cyclones rallied for five runs in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead. Cyclones designated hitter Ross Adolph reached base five times with two triples, a double, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, three runs, and three RBI.
Robbie Welhaf made his NYPL debut out of Connecticut's pen and picked up four outs with two hits allowed. The Tigers recorded their largest margin of defeat this season and fell to 1-7 against Brooklyn. Following the loss, Connecticut's playoff elimination number fell to 3 games.
On Saturday, the Tigers and Cyclones meet in the rubber match of their three-game series on Coney Island. Connecticut righty Jose Vasquez (5-2, 1.81) boasts the third-best ERA in the league and draws the series finale start against Brooklyn righty Kyle Wilson (3-3, 3.20) with first pitch at 6:00 p.m. Coverage on the Norwich Courtyard by Marriott CT Tigers Radio Network begins at 5:50 p.m. with Kevin Gehl on WICH 1310 AM and online at CTTigers.com.
