C's move two games clear of Spokane in North after 4-0 victory
August 19, 2018 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - 26 consecutive scoreless innings from the Vancouver Canadians pitching staff is a large part of the reason that Spokane is heading down to Everett's Memorial Stadium two games back in the North Division after Sunday's 4-0 loss out at historic Scotiabank Field.
Canadians RHP Josh Winckowski went seven scoreless innings and yet didn't factor in the decision as Indians LHP Jake Latz was equally as impressive until he ran into trouble in the 8th as a throwing error proved to be the difference in a tightly contested battle between long-time rivals.
Winckowski retired the first 11 Indians hitters in order as the right-hander allowed just four hits over his seven innings striking out six while Latz went seven innings allowing just three hits before he ran into trouble in the bottom of the 8th. After a leadoff double from Canadians SS Jesus Severino, Latz walked 3B Sterling Guzman marking the first time on Sunday that the C's had multiple runner's on-base. After a visit to the mound from Indians manager Kenny Holmberg, the left-hander remained in the game and faced 2B Nick Podkul who laid down a sacrifice bunt back to Latz in hopes of simply moving both Severino and Guzman into scoring position. Latz picked up the bunt, spun around toward third base and short-hopped Indians 3B Cristian Inoa who watched the ball skip past his glove and roll into shallow left field allowing the Canadians Severino to come home to count.
It was the last batter that Latz would face.
Spokane reliever RHP Austin Pettibone came in and got two quick outs before a line drive off the bat of Canadians C Chris Bec bounced off the glove of Cristian Inoa allowing Guzman to score from third base. Seconds later DH Yorman Rodriguez would hit a two-out single to right field scoring both Podkul and Bec to give Vancouver a 4-0 lead.
RHP Fitz Stadler pitched a scoreless 8th inning before RHP Cobi Johnson completed the series victory with a scoreless inning of work as the Canadians improved to 34-28 (.548) and 15-9 (.625) on the second half of the season.
Vancouver now travels to Pasco, WA to open a three-game road series at Tri-City that begins on Monday, August 20th at 7:15pm through Wednesday, August 22nd at 7:15pm with all three games heard at www.canadiansbaseball.com.
Vancouver Canadians Baseball returns to Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium on Thursday, August 23rd at 7:05pm as the Boise Hawks (Colorado Rockies) come north of the border for five games that run through August 27th.
