TRAVERSE CITY, MI. - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, used two solid pitching performances and some big time hits to sweep the doubleheader from the Traverse City Beach Bums on Wednesday night.

It didn't take long for Lake Erie to open the scoring in game one. A run in the first inning gave the Crushers a 1-0 lead before they broke the game open in the second inning.

The Crushers scored twice in the second inning before Sean Hurley delivered a two-run double, making it 5-0. Cody Lenahan followed with an RBI double to push the lead to 6-0.

The Crushers scored again in the third when Mason Brown scored on a wild pitch and Dane Hutcheon doubled in Joel McKeithan to make it 8-0. All eight runs were charged to Luke DeVenney (0-1) who went six innings.

Crushers starter Mason Klotz (3-3) was dealing for Lake Erie. Klotz allowed a hit in the first inning and didn't allow another until the seventh inning. The right-hander pitched all seven innings which was a season-high while allowing just two hits and one walk. He struck out five in the win.

Game two was tightly contested as the Beach Bums jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Sean Renzi (7-4). The damage came on a two-run double by Will Kengor but Renzi worked out of a bases loaded jam to prevent any more runs.

Lake Erie broke through against lefty John Havird (3-6) in the fourth inning. Lenahan and Doug Trimble led off with singles before McKeithan hit a three-run home run. His fourth homer of the season gave the Crushers a 3-2 lead. Havird went five innings and allowed three runs in the loss.

In the sixth inning Lake Erie got a little insurance against reliever Kenneth Knudsen. A leadoff home run from Lenahan made it 4-2. That was his second home run of the season.

Traverse City scored a run in the sixth inning against Renzi which trimmed the lead to 4-3. With two on and two outs, manager Cam Roth went to his bullpen and Seth Lucio got the final out. Renzi struck out 12 in the game which tied his season-high.

Logan Lombana closed the game out in the ninth to secure his fourth save. Lake Erie (35-27) moves into a tie for first place with Joliet. Traverse City falls to 30-31 with the loss.

The Crushers will go for the sweep tomorrow at 7:05 PM. Alex Romero (6-4) takes the mound for the Crushers while Reinaldo Lopez (6-3) goes for the Beach Bums. The Crushers have now won nine of their last 12 games.
