Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy Health, could not hold onto an early 3-0 lead, as they fell to the Schaumburg Boomers, 5-4 on Saturday night at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium.
The loss for the Crushers (15-11) marks the first time this season that they've lost three games in a row, and was their fifth in their last six games at home, while the victory for the Boomers (12-13) was their fifth in their last six games.
The Crushers used a little two out thunder to plate a trio of runs in the bottom of the third. Sean Hurley started the inning with a single, Aaron Hill reached on a one out walk, and they both came home on Bryan DeLaRosa's two out double down the left field line to give the Crushers a 2-0 lead. A two-out error allowed Cameron Newell to reach, before Dane Hutcheon smacked a RBI double down the left field line to score DeLaRosa, giving the Crushers a 3-0 lead.
Schaumburg responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Jack Parenty reached on a leadoff single, before Clint Hardy walked. Two batters later, Sean Godfrey walked to load the bases with one out, and Ty Moore followed with a two run single to right field.
The Boomers then added two more to take the lead in the top of the fourth. The first three batters of the inning reached to load the bases, before Ben Smith (0-0) induced a pop-out, but he then uncorked a wild pitch which allowed James Keller to score the tying run, and Collin Ferguson drovein the go-ahead run on a RBI groundout to plate Josh Gardiner.
A bizarre play allowed the Crushers to tie things up in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Crushers had runners on second and third with one out, when Kewby Meyer hit a fly ball to left field. Ty Moore made the catch in left field, and then threw to second base to double up Dane Hutcheon. However, Cameron Newell, the runner on third, scored before Hutcheon was doubled up on the play, tying the game at 4-4.
Schaumburg scored the eventual game winning run in the top of the seventh. Sean Godfrey was hit by a pitch with one out, and three consecutive singles followed. The last base hit in that sequence was a RBI single from Zack Weigel to plate Godfrey.
Payton Lobdell (1-2) scored the victory for Schaumburg, allowing four runs on five hits while fanning five over six innings of work and Jake Joyce (4) worked a perfect ninth inning to get the save. Ethan Westphal (0-2) took the loss after allowing just a run on three hits over three innings and struck out six.
Only three Crushers hit safely on the night, and Sean Hurley led the way, going 3-for-4 with a trio of singles.
The Crushers will finish their three-game series against the Schaumburg Boomers at Sprenger Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Righty Mason Klotz (2-0, 2.00) will get the start for the Crushers and the Boomers will counter with righty Steve Ridings (2-2, 2.73). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
