Connecticut Crush News Release
NEWINGTON, CT â June 2, 2004 â The Connecticut Crush Women's Professional Football Team (5-2) erased any doubts after last week's mediocre performance versus the Maine Freeze and proved to be a worthy playoff contender this past Saturday, with a stunning 18-16 victory over the previously undefeated Philadelphia Phoenix. The Crush is the only team to beat the Phoenix in each of the past two seasons, thereby tarnishing Philly's perfect record yet again.
It was an emotional game for the Crush. At first, it looked as if they would be in for a long, painful evening. The Phoenix scored with ease on their first two possessions, a 27-yard touchdown reception by tight end Cathy Nugent and later on a 2-yard touchdown run by fullback Rachelle Pecovsky. But the Crush defense maintained its composure, regrouped, and came back to hold Philly's devastating offense scoreless for the remainder of the game.
With a strong defensive stance, the Crush offense was able to finally get itself on track as well. The Crush established the running game early on, a tactic seldom used in the first meeting earlier in the season. Running back April Meyer had her best performance of the season to date, with 31 carries, 161 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns (10-yard, 4-yard, and 3-yard respectively). The Crush were not successful with any of the 2-point conversions attempted on the night. The only other score of the evening came on a botched snap recovered in the end zone at the end of the 3rd quarter which resulted in a safety for Philadelphia. But on this night, it wasn't enough. The Crush took a knee on the final two plays of the game to preserve the victory.
The Crush are off this weekend but return to action for the final home game of the regular season on Saturday, June 12th at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in New Britain, adjacent to the home of the New Britain Rock Cats. Kick off is 7:05PM. For more details on the Connecticut Crush, including game dates, ticket sales, or player information, visit the team website at www.crushfootball.com or email team@ctcrush.com.
