Connecticut Crush News Release
Crush women's professional football team died Saturday 10/1/05 when she was struck by a motorist in Hartford, Carolyn Bell, 40, died after she was hit by an apparent drunken driver late Friday near her Nilan Street home. Hartford Police charged Eugenio Rivera, 24, of Hartford, with driving under the influence
There aren't any words to describe how we feel about the loss of our teammate, friend, and sister Bell. She touched us all in many ways. She is one of the Hearts and Soul of this team. Her love and Dedication to her Crush Family speaks for itself. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Bell was pretty much the face of the team," team owner Melanie DePamphilis said Sunday. "If you had a social event, or any event, you expected to see her. She was the one smiling and you'd hear her voice
a mile away. It's going to take a while to get over that."
The team is devastated, she said. "Stepping out onto the field without Bell is going to be the hardest thing for the team to do." Carolyn Bell was born in London, England on July 7, 1965. She came to the US at age 3 and lived in Hartford throughout her life. Bell, as she was known to her friends & Co-Workers was a teacher at the Grace Webb School in Hartford,CT.
She leaves her parents, Vivienne Bell and Alvin Bell, of Hartford, a brother Rodney of Australia, and two sisters, Anthea of NY and Sonia, England . She leaves a host of relatives from the US, Canada, Jamaica, Australia and England. Left to grieve her loss are more friends, co-workers and teammates then imaginable!
Bell graduated from Northwest Catholic High School and the University of New Haven. She played on the University of New Haven's Division II national championship basketball team in 1987. She began playing with the CT Crush in 2001. Bell received many awards including MVP for the CT Crush both in 2002 and 2003 and was recognized for achievement on and off the field in 2002, 2003 and 2004, according to DePamphilis. She also was the team captain for the last three years. Bell was bigger than life. For her the glass wasn't half full, it was overflowing. Everyone who ever came into contact with her, remembered her for her amazing spirit, energy and love. She will be missed more than we can ever imagine.
Bell was active in a number of charities and organizations, most notably Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the UNH Alumni Association, the CT AIDS Bike Tour and the Provincetown Swim for Life.
