Syracuse Crunch News Release
UTICA, N.Y. - Mike Halmo scored early in the third period to send the Syracuse Crunch into overtime for the fifth time in six games before falling to the Utica Comets, 2-1, tonight at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
The Comets were first on the board in the second period, but Halmo tallied the equalizer in the third to send the teams into extra time and set a new career-mark with a goal in four consecutive games. By making it to overtime, the Crunch earned one point and move to 18-9-2-5 on the season. The team is now 2-1-1-1 in the 12-game Galaxy Cup season series.
Kristers Gudlevskis stopped 29-of-31 shots between the pipes for the Crunch, while Thatcher Demko earned the win turning aside 30-of-31 for the Comets. Syracuse went 1-for-4 on the power play and a perfect 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
After a scoreless first period, the Comets struck first during a 2-on-1 play at the 4:34 mark of the middle stanza. Curtis Valk skated down the right wing side and sent a cross-slot feed for Alexandre Grenier to one-time home.
Halmo evened the score 7:04 into the final frame while on the power play to eventually force overtime. Cory Conacher started the play in the right circle and passed up to Matt Taormina at the center point. Halmo was parked in front of the cage to redirect Taormina's wrist shot through traffic.
The Comets went on to take the victory 3:11 into the overtime period. Darren Archibald took the puck coast to coast and beat Gudlevskis from the right circle.
The Crunch return home to host the Toronto Marlies on Friday at 7 p.m.
