As the season grows older, the urgency rises across the league as points become increasingly important to obtain. Rio Grande has doubled down on the intensity and focus in order to secure all points available as they keep their postseason berth quest alive, with a familiar face in the way this week.
In-state rival El Paso Locomotive look to derail any hopes that the Toros have in making the climbs in the standings as they host RGV FC in a pivotal Copa Tejas match for the South Texas side. El Paso are coming off a solid pair of matches against Western Conference sides after defeating both Phoenix Rising (3-1) and New Mexico United (1-2) back -to-back to earn a sixth place spot in the West which inches closer to a playoff berth.
RGV FC have displayed their firepower potential offensively in the last two matches, scoring six goals in two games. The Toros dropped three obtainable points at Phoenix Rising just days ago after a 2-1 loss which dented their record. Despite the result, the side has remained confident and grow eager to show their strength on the pitch, as they have done all season against any caliber of opponent.
Newcomer Christian Pinzon has led the charge with his three goals in three matches recently, while complimenting well with Jonas Fjeldberg who locked in two goals in one match to get back on pace to what he left off at last year in finding the offensive groove for RGV.
Look for a tightly fought matchup on Wednesday evening as both sides look to secure three points in the closing stages of the 2022 campaign. Juan Cabezas, Jose Torres and Emilio Ycaza have been a solid veteran core for Wilmer Cabrera as he looks to play up high consistently to create those much needed tries at goal and hope to stun the home team before packing up to head back to H-E-B Park after a month long absence from their home pitch.
