Chicago Stars FC News Release
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. - Red Stars forward Cristiane has been named Women's Professional Soccer's Player of the Week for week 16, the league announced today. Cristiane becomes the second consecutive Red Stars player to earn the honor, which is selected by a panel of writers with the North American Soccer Reporters.
Cristiane became the first player in WPS history to record a hat trick Sunday, scoring each of the Red Stars' goals in a 3-1 win over FC Gold Pride. The Osasco, Brazil, native showed her world-class finishing ability by burning a defender and firing a left-footed shot into the upper corner in the 65th minute to cap her scoring. Cristiane also scored a goal on the first penalty kick in Chicago franchise history.
The reigning third-place finisher in FIFA Player of the Year voting, Cristiane leads the Red Stars with six goals on the season - all of them coming since June 3rd. She has scored four goals in Chicago's last two matches.
Cristiane is the second Brazilian to be named WPS Player of the Week during the 2009 season. Her partner up front for Brazil's national team, Marta, was WPS Player of the Week in weeks 2 and 14.
Red Stars captain Lindsay Tarpley also earned WPS Player of the Week honors in week 15.
The Red Stars return to action Wednesday, July 15th at Boston before returning home to TOYOTA PARK for a 3 pm game on Sunday, July 26th, against Abby Wambach and the Washington Freedom. The Red Stars will go green for the game, wearing special green jerseys and celebrating environmentally friendly causes. The popular Chicago band Hello Dave will play a pregame concert in the Red Stars' Fun Zone, beginning at 2 pm.
