Crim sets franchise record with ninth win

DANVILLE, VA - Matt Crim worked six strong innings on his way to a franchise-record ninth win as the Braves swept away the Royals with a 7-1 win before 1,437 fans at Dan Daniel Memorial Park Saturday night. Crim surpassed Delvis Pacheco (1996), Anthony Lerew (2002) and Brad Nelson (2003), who each tallied eight wins apiece. Danville improved to 10-0 on the season against Burlington and upped its record to 36-16, while the Royals fell to 18-34.
The Braves jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Bobby Rauh was hit by a pitch to lead off, but was retired on Mycal Jones' fielder's choice. Cory Harrilchak then grounded out to third on a hit-and-run play, but Jones flew all the way to third. The throw from first baseman Jacob Kuebler sailed into the tarp along the line and Jones scored on the dead ball. Burlington's Travis Jones tied the game with an RBI double in the second.
In the third, singles by Matt Weaver and Bobby Rauh put runners on the corners. A groundout to first moved Rauh to second. Harrilchak's single to right plated Weaver and Rauh, who scored after right fielder Luis Del Rosario misplayed the ball.
The Braves put the game away in the fourth with three runs. Robby Hefflinger led off with a single and scored on a double by Christian Bethancourt, making his Danville debut after his call-up from the Gulf Coast League. Jordan Kreke laid down a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Kreke moved all the way to third on Weaver's groundout that scored Bethancourt. Rauh drove in the third run on his own groundout to give the Braves a 6-1 lead.
Osman Marval's golf shot home run to right, his first of the season, in the fifth inning capped the game's scoring and put it in the hands of Crim and the bullpen.
Crim (9-0) faced just three over the minimum in his six innings. He allowed three singles and a double, but never faced any trouble, except in the second when he surrendered his only run and the only earned run allowed by the staff in the last 35 innings. The lefty allowed just the one run on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Keaton Hayenga (2-6) took the loss, going five innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits.
Luis Avilan picked up his second save, tossing three hitless innings in relief of Crim.
The Braves now hit the road for a three-game set beginning Sunday with the Appy League West Division-leading Elizabethton Twins. Cory Rasmus (2-2, 3.32 ERA) will look to build off his no-hitter against Tom Stuifbergen (4-1, 3.06 ERA).
