Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, VA - The Danville Braves returned home from a 5-1 road trip on Tuesday night, but nothing changed for the pitching staff as Matt Crim and Luis Avilan pitched the Braves to a 3-0 shutout over second-place Princeton. Braves starters have a 1.35 ERA in their last seven games and the entire Danville staff has allowed just three earned runs over the last five games. The Braves are now 28-13, while the Rays fell to 23-14, three games behind Danville.
The Braves offense got all it needed in the first inning as lead-off hitter L.V. Ware started the rally with a double to right-center. Mycal Jones then reached on an error by shortstop Daniel Rhault to put runners on the corners. Cory Harrilchak's RBI groundout scored Ware and moved Jones to second. Robbie Hefflinger drove in Jones on a two-out single up the middle to make it 2-0.
Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg's sacrifice fly in the third scored Ware, who had doubled for the second time, to put the finishing touch on Danville's offense for the night
From there, Crim (7-0) shut down the Princeton lineup. Only two runners reached second base (and none after the third) off the left-hander, who collected his league-leading seventh win. He worked seven innings, allowing four hits, all singles, with one walk and four strikeouts.
Avilan picked up his first save, tossing the final two innings. He surrendered just a one-out double in the ninth inning, but retired the last two hitters on strike outs to end the game.
Rays starter Zach Rosscup (1-2) took the loss, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk with one strikeout. Jeff Cinadr and Kirby Yates combined to five-hit the Braves in 5.1 shutout innings to close the game.
Offensively for Danville, Ware was 2-4 with two doubles and two runs scored and Harrilchak raised his average to .333 with a 2-4 night.
The Braves send Cory Rasmus (1-1, 3.33 ERA) to the hill Wednesday night at 7 p.m. to take on Princeton right-hander Trevor Shull (2-1, 3.86 ERA).
