COLUMBUS, Ohio (Friday, April 21, 2006) - The Columbus Crew was honored with a Central Ohio Emerald Award in the "Partnership" category by the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) at the inaugural ceremony held yesterday, April 20, at the Hilton at Easton.

The Partnership award was presented to The Crew "For implementation of successful partnerships between and among agencies, communities, groups, organizations and/or businesses that meet the goals of litter prevention, reducing waste, recycling, reusing or buying recycled content products."

"On behalf of the entire Columbus Crew organization, I would like to thank SWACO for recognizing us with the Central Ohio Emerald Award," said Crew General Manager Mark McCullers. "The Crew is committed to enhancing the quality of life in Central Ohio, not only through the game of soccer, but also through community and civic-minded relationships. Through our partnership, SWACO has provided us with the tools necessary to help build a better tomorrow through recycling."

"SWACO is proud to partner with organizations like The Columbus Crew," said Mike Long, Executive Director, SWACO. "The team and its front office are committed to delivering a quality product on the field as well as off the field. Their commitment to the community is refreshing."

SWACO is one of the 52 solid waste districts created by the Ohio General Assembly in 1989. Each of those districts was established with the mission of reducing a reliance on landfills. Since its birth, SWACO has become a catalyst for recycling and reuse programs in Franklin County and within the district. It also continues to pioneer with leading edge programs that find new uses for our "trash of the past, present and future."

Today SWACO operates the current 3,300-ton-per-day Franklin County Landfill near I-71 and Rt. 665 in Southern Franklin County (purchased from Franklin County in 1991). It also owns and operates three transfer stations around Franklin County. Displaying how old landfills can see new use, the former Franklin County landfill just south of Columbus has been turned into the Phoenix Golf Links by SWACO. The 19-hole, Scottish Style Links course opened in 2000.
