(Eastlake, OH)--Hickory's Steve Lerud singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning Saturday night, helping the Crawdads to a 3-1, comeback win over the Captains at Classic Park.
Lerud lined a base hit through a pulled-in infield to drive in Jason Delaney for a 2-1 lead. The Crawdads scored two runs in the seventh off Jason Schutt (1-3) to take a 2-1 lead. Tony Mansolino tied the game on an RBI groundout to drive in Brad Corley, who led off the inning with a single.
The Crawdads (26-22) extended the lead to 3-1 in the eighth on a walk to Mike McCuistion and an RBI double by Corley.
The Captains (26-20) loaded the bases in the eighth with one out, but Justin Vaclavik came in to relieve Jean Garavito and retired Chris Gimenez on a strikeout and Mike Butia on a fielder's choice to end the threat. Vaclavik then worked the ninth for his 12th save.
Blair Johnson (3-4) worked the first six innings for Hickory, giving up three hits and a run.
The Captains wasted a strong starting performance by Jeff Stevens, who tossed six scoreless innings and left with a 1-0 lead. Stevens has now thrown 21 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings.
The Lakewood BlueClaws defeated Lexington 5-4, pushing the Captains to five games behind in the SAL North.
The Captains and Crawdads will play game three of the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05. The first 2,000 kids 12 and under will receive a free Captains lunch bag courtesy of Heinen's.
