Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
7-10 Split
JUPITER, FL (June 30, 2014) - The Stone Crabs experienced their own version of the agony and the ecstasy all day Monday at Roger Dean Stadium. After waiting around for a rain delay on Sunday afternoon, they arrived bright and early for a doubleheader to close out their six-game roadtrip. All they needed was a win in either of the two games to take the series from the Hammerheads, while a sweep would give them a 4-2 finish before returning home. A 10-0 shutout in the first game was a great first course, but Viosergy Rosa ruined dessert with a game-winning three-run homer to give Jupiter a 6-5 victory on the backend.
Looking for his first win in his third start, Albert Suarez carried a low 1.00 ERA in nine innings to start his season. He was perfect the first time through the order, and was fortunate enough to watch the offense erupt in the top of the third. Matt Milroy's (0-2) control became a huge issue, and he loaded the bases after a walk and a pair of hit batsmen. Four straight balls to Leonardo Reginatto made it 1-0 before Marty Gantt crushed an opposite field home run to right for the first Stone Crabs grand slam in 2014 and a 5-0 lead.
In the fourth, Tyler Goeddel stole second and third after a one out walk. Another walk and a stolen base by Patrick Leonard put two runners in scoring position for Maxx Tissenbaum, who continued his torrid month with a two run single for a 7-0 lead. Another single by Leonardo Reginatto made it 8-0, and the last two runs would score in the sixth on Ariel Soriano's two-run single. Marcus Jensen preserved the shutout with two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh to give Suarez (1-0) his first victory since July 7, 2012, when he threw six innings in a 3-1 win against the Cardinals.
The scoring in game two began after a rain delay lasting more than 90 minutes postponed the start time. With two outs in the second, Jonathan Quionez bounced Austin Brice's hanging breaking ball into left for a run scoring single and a 1-0 lead. Pitching in front of his parents, who were visiting from Texas, Austin Pruitt surrendered a game-tying single to Anthony Gomez in the home third before the Hammerheads took the lead in the next inning.
With Matt Juengel at first after a fielder's choice groundout, Blake Barber's double down into the left field corner gave the Hammerheads a 2-1 lead. Jesus Solorzano's flyout to center allowed Barber to tag to third, where he'd later score on Josh Adams' infield single to short. Charlotte tied it up just three batters into the fifth after Tommy Coyle led off with a walk, advancing to second on Brice's errant pickoff attempt. Goetzman's chopper down the left field line trimmed the deficit to 3-2, but Barber's perfect throw to second nabbed him for the first out. The next pitch was taken out over the left field fence by Leonard, who tied the score with his 12th home run of the season.
That score held until the seventh, when Goetzman opened the frame with a double that sailed high off the wall in left. Leonard's infield single led to Justin O'Conner's bloop single into right for a 4-3 lead, but the Stone Crabs catcher was caught up in between the bases for the first out. A walk to Goeddel and a groundout by Reginatto brought up Sale, who unloaded an RBI single off second baseman Justin Bohn for his third three-hit game and a 5-3 lead.
Zach Cooper's (0-1) best attempts to pick up the final three outs and the save started on the wild side with four fastballs out of the zone for a leadoff walk to Gomez. He then struck out Ryan Goetz, but Bohn's single into center put the tying runs on base. Colin Moran's flyout to left set up the showdown with Rosa, and the Bronx-born first baseman shocked the `Crabs with a towering drive to right for the game-winning three-run homer.
