Edinburg Coyotes News Release
Edinburg, TX - The Edinburg Coyotes split a pair of seven inning games with the Laredo Broncos Saturday night falling in the first game 4-3 and winning the night cap by a final of 7-5. Edinburg with their nightcap victory won their 10th game of the season as they try to keep pace with first place Rio Grande Valley. Both teams will suit up for game three of the series on Sunday with a 7:05 scheduled first pitch.
Edinburg was able to belt a home off of Laredo game one starter Santo Hernandez for the fourth time this season; however it came as an attempt to rally as Edinburg was already down 4-0 to the Broncos. The Broncos struck Edinburg starter Dario Ferrand for 4 fourth inning runs after Ferrand had faced the minimum through the first three innings. With Laredo ahead 1-0 and one out, Laredo right fielder Juan Lebron belted his second homerun of the season over the left field wall giving the Broncos a 3-0 advantage. Three batters later Orlando Cruz doubled home the eventual game winning run, as he plated Hector Lebron. Ferrand, (0-3) was dominant in every other inning and totaled 10 strike outs in the no decision loss in game one.
The homerun Hernandez allowed came in the fifth as Barrett Rice hit his third long ball of the season and his second off of Hernandez. The two-run shot cut the deficit in half at 4-2. Edinburg plated another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Eric Gonzalez but could not get the tying run across. Hernandez (3-0) earned the complete game victory allowing only two earned runs in seven innings while striking out five.
The second game proved to be much better for the Edinburg hitters, especially in the second inning. The Coyotes set 10 batters to the plate and erased Laredo starter Jose Cordero from the game and took a 6-1 lead after two innings. Luis Espinosa kicked off the inning to a lead off single to left and advanced to second on a throwing error by left fielder Luis Ramos. Barrett Rice then singled on a hot shot one-hopper to short-stop Ivan Reyes. Two batters later in a bases loaded situation, Amado German drove in a run with an RBI single to right scoring Espinosa to tie the game at 1. After a bases loaded walk and a sac fly by Nelson Teilon. Alexis Hernandez drove in the fourth Edinburg run with a double to left scoring German. Bases load walks to Barrett Rice and Luis Espinosa ended the scoring for Edinburg as it was 6-0 after 2. Edinburg added a run in the third on an RBI single by Patrick Gaylord. Cordero (2-2) allowed six earned runs in just 1.2 innings of work and tallied just one strikeout.
Bric Steed was shaky in his fourth start of the year but was effective enough to earn the victory. Steed (4-0), went five innings and allowed three earned and struck out three. Julio Castro allowed an un-earned run in the ninth but still earned his league leading seventh save of the year.
The Coyotes will send Neomar Flores to the hill on Sunday night in game three of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
