Edinburg, TX; July 5, 2007-After two days off due to the rainouts, the Edinburg Coyotes finally took to the field to play the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings, but suffered a quick rude awakening. Edinburg starter Neomar Flores faced 10 Whitewing batters in the first and retired only one as the Whitewings routed the Coyotes 12-6 in front of 4713 at Edinburg Baseball Stadium Thursday night.
Things started for Rio at the start of the lineup with Bub Bergstrom notching a single, which was followed by six more singles, and a triple by Danilo Reynoso giving Rio the early lead 8-0. One more run was posted on Flores (2-4) who was replaced by Bryan Heaston in the first just 1/3 of an inning.
Edinburg retrieved three runs in the second inning after a double by Luis Espinosa, followed by Barrett Rice getting hit by a pitch, and Adam Bonner walking bringing up Nick Aranda who nabbed an RBI but was thrown out at first. Eric Gonzalez then singled scoring Rice and Bonner to end the scoring in the inning.
Rio picked up three more runs throughout the contest including two solo homeruns, one by Ryan Fox in the sixth, and one by Reynoso in the seventh. Edinburg was able to pick up one more run in the fourth and two in the ninth, but it was not matter as they were defeated 12-6.
Next up the two will battle again at Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Fiesta Friday. Starting pitchers in the contest, for the Edinburg Coyotes, Eric Montoya and for Rio, Julian Willams.
The Edinburg Coyotes are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas and Louisiana. The United League in its second season with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Laredo, Harlingen, and San Angelo, Texas; and Alexandria, Louisiana. The ULB will play a 100-game schedule between May and August 2007. The 2007 ULB All-Star Game is July 11th in Amarillo, TX.
