GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the team has selected defenseman Brandon Gormley with the 13th overall pick in the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.
Gormley, 18, recorded 9-34-43 and 54 penalty minutes (PIM) in 58 games with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) last season. He finished with a +31 rating, which ranked 3rd on his team. Gormley also registered 2-15-17 in 21 playoff games, which ranked 3rd among QMJHL defensemen in the playoffs, to help lead Moncton to the 2010 QMJHL Championship. In three Memorial Cup games, Gormley led his team in scoring with 1-2-3. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Gormley was named to the QMJHL Second All-Star Team and awarded the Michael Bossy Trophy as the Top Professional Prospect.
After his first season in the QMJHL in 2008-09 in which he collected 7-20-27 in 62 games, the native of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island was named the Wildcats' Rookie of the Year and selected as the 2008 PEI Junior Male Athlete of the Year.
Gormley won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2009 Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament in the Czech Republic and was the only 17-year-old defenseman to attend the 2010 World Junior evaluation camp.
NHL Central Scouting Report: Brandon is what a lot of teams are going for. He's a good defenseman who can score and handle the puck, and is smart. Gormley has got the whole package. He's got a good shot from the point, an accurate shot, low and can be deflected.
