Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - Harlingen WhiteWings (3-6) closer Derek Bennett (1-1) blew his second save of the season by allowing a two-run double to Gary Roche in the top of the ninth as the Edinburg Coyotes (6-3) picked up an 11-10 win tonight at Harlingen Field.
Bennett started the ninth by walking Jason Arrowood on a 3-2 pitch. Bric Steed pinch-ran and Jermaine Williams singled on an 0-2 pitch. Patrick Gaylod popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt and Nick Aranda struck out. Bennett went to 3-2 on Angelo Fermin before walking him to load the bases, setting up Roche's double.
Julio Castro pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.
The WhiteWings scored first for the third-straight games as Bub Bergstrom led off with a walk against Miliade Venas. He stole second and moved to third as the throw went into center field. Miguel Peguero followed with a one-out sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
The lead didn't last long, though, as the Coyotes got to James Beever with two outs in the second. With Williams on third and Gaylord on first, Aranda hit an RBI-single, moving Gaylord to third. Fermin put down a perfect bunt, placing the ball in no-man's land between first and second to pick up an RBI-single to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead.
The WhiteWings got that run right back, though, as Kevin Griffin led off the bottom of the inning with a double, moved to second on a Terry Roblez ground out and scored on an Argelis Nunez ground out to tie the game 2-2.
The Coyotes took advantage of sloppy fielding by the WhiteWings to score five runs in the fourth. Williams led off with a single. Gaylord followed with a grounder to short that snuck into left field for a single. Aranda followed with a bunt single between the mound and first to load the bases. Fermin then hit a grounder to second, but he was too fast and the WhiteWings could get only get the out at second as a run scored. Roche followed with an RBI double and Daryl Jones hit an RBI-single. Logan Wood followed with a sacrifice fly for the second out. Eric Gonzalez reached on an error to extend the inning for Jason Arrowood's RBI-single, making it 7-2 after sending ten men to the plate.
The WhiteWings atoned for their fielding in the bottom of the fourth, though sending 11 men to the plate and scoring seven runs. Brian Nichols led it off with his third home run of the season, a no-doubt shot to right field. Griffin followed with a single and stole second. Roblez then hit an RBI-single. Nunez singled but was erased as Candelario Perez reached on a fielder's choice. A wild pitch scored Roblez as Perez moved to second. Bergstrom followed with his third walk to knock out Venas. Adam Clay came in and David Fowler singled to set up another Peguero sacrifice fly. Clay fell behind Ryan Fox 3-0 and then intentionally walked him. That brought up Nichols again, and he hit a three-run triple to give the WhiteWings a 9-7 lead.
The Coyotes tied the game against Todd Lutz with two out runs in the sixth and seventh. In the sixth Wood walked and Gonzalez doubled him in. In the seventh, Aranda doubled and Fermin singled him in to tie the game 9-9.
Miguel Martinez (1-0) couldn't preserve the tie as Roblez doubled home Nichols in the seventh to make it 10-9 WhiteWings.
The WhiteWings welcome the Laredo Broncos into town tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Kenny Evoniuk (0-1) will face Andy Schon (1-0) in a rematch of last Saturday's 12-1 Broncos win in Laredo.
