San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - In a game that featured 33 hits, including six home runs-one of which was a grand slam-the San Angelo Colts out-slugged the Laredo Broncos on Thursday night in front of 2,369 at Foster Field. Behind four homers and good pitching in big spots, the Colts defeated the Broncos 13-9 to take the three-game series two games to one.

Benny Craig homered from both sides of the plate - the first Colt to do so this year, and Adam Miller hit the first San Angelo grand slam of the season, chasing Broncos starter Julian Williams (0-1) in the fifth. Andres Rodriguez belted his team-leading fourth of the season as well, as San Angelo (5-4) got back-to-back homers for the first time this season when Craig and Rodriguez went deep in the eighth.

All of the offense was enough to back starter Logan Williamson (1-0). The lefty went five and two-thirds innings to pick up the victory, allowing six runs on 10 hits, with six strikeouts and only one walk. Taylor Fleming went the next two and a third innings, getting a strikeout of Ivan Reyes with a man on second to end the sixth, and a strikeout of Arnoldo Ponce to end the seventh with the bases loaded and the tying run on first.

San Angelo actually fell behind early in the game, as the Broncos (4-5) got five singles in the span of six batters to score three runs in the second. But the Colts got all of those back in the bottom half, with Craig's two-run shot starting the rally and an RBI single by Miller to tie it up. San Angelo took their first lead of the night in the third, as Jason Crosland, who had two hits and played a perfect third base (including a nice sliding catch), knocked home John Anderson with a single.

Laredo tied it up again in the fourth, but the Colts responded in the bottom half, when Tyrone Pendergrass scored Miller with a two-out single. But the big blow came in the fifth, with Williams over 100 pitches in his first start of the season. After the inning started with back-to-back strikeouts, Craig walked, and Rodriguez doubled him to third. Jose Torres walked to load the bases, and Miller bashed his first homer of the year to left-center, as the grand slam gave San Angelo a 9-4 lead.

The teams traded two-spots in the sixth and eighth, and Johnny Lopez homered off Brian Daly in the ninth for the final margin. Daly made his team-leading fifth appearance of the year in the ninth.

They previously had 13 in the season opener against Edinburg...San Angelo had at least a hit in every inning for the second time this season. The first time was in a 9-8 loss to Alexandria on May 16.
