Courtney Jones Announces Retirement from Professional Soccer

HANOVER, Mass. (Jan. 22, 2015) - Boston Breakers midfielder Courtney Jones announced today her decision to retire from professional soccer in order to pursue her dream of starting up her own business. Jones, 24, retires after playing two seasons in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).

"I can't thank the NWSL and the Boston Breakers organization enough for giving me an opportunity to play the game I love," Jones said. "The Breakers have been an amazing group of people to work for and work with. I made lifelong friends and met incredible people while in Boston, and I will never forget the memories I made as a Breaker."

Acquired on Oct. 17, 2013 via trade with FC Kansas City, Jones made her Breakers professional debut in the 2014 NWSL season. Jones registered career highs in minutes played (1,296, which ranked her sixth on the team), games played (18), and games started (13). She also scored three goals and tallied one assist.

"We will definitely miss Courtney, and her family, here in Boston," Boston Breakers general manager Lee Billiard said. "I cannot speak highly enough of Courtney as a professional athlete and role model for younger players in this sport. She is a real class act, and I am sure we will see her at some point on the sidelines cheering on the team this season."

In 2013 with FC Kansas City, Jones made 22 appearances (six starts) scoring four goals, which ranked her third on the team. She also tallied one assist in 670 minutes of action.

Jones made her post-collegiate debut in 2012, playing for the Breakers in Women's Premier Soccer League Elite. She started 12 of the 14 games she appeared in and tied for the team lead in assists (six), while adding two goals in 931 minutes. Jones was initially drafted by the Breakers in the 2012 Women's Professional Draft, shortly before the league ceased operations.

Under head coach Anson Dorrance at the University of North Carolina, Jones won two NCAA championships (2008, 2009), two ACC regular-season championships, and two ACC Tournament championships.
