Courchaine Earns 1st Shutout For Otters In 1-0 Shootout Win

February 15, 2010 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release

Adam Courchaine stopped 37 shots for the Erie Otters and all three shooters in the shootout as Derek Holden netted his second shootout game-winner of the season in a remarkable 1-0 win Monday afternoon on the road against the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors.

The shootout almost didn't happen, as Courchaine gave up the puck with precious seconds remaining in regulation, only to see it go into the net from a Devante Smith-Pelly shot. A lengthy and precarious video review went in the Otters' favor, as time had expired in regulation to breathe new life into the Otters.

The game was a defensive battle throughout. Courchaine made several key stops in the second, including a nifty glove save on William Wallen during a power play and consecutive saves on Wallen and Gregg Sutch to keep the Majors off the board.

Majors netminder Chris Carrozzi was terrific in his own right, stopping five shots during a lengthy Otters two-man advantage and an Andrew Yogan penalty shot with seven seconds remaining in the second period.

Carrozzi also stoned Anthony Luciani on a breakaway, and Holden bailed out the Otters by breaking up a two-on-none from behind in the closing minutes. After the Majors appeared to have won the game, Courchaine stole the show in overtime with two amazing glove saves to force a shootout.

It would take until the third round to decide things, as Holden streaked in to his left and fired a wrist shot through the blocker side of Carrozzi to seal the win for the Otters, their first road win since New Year's Eve.

The Otters continue on the road to Canada's capital city to take on the Ottawa 67's Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the game in the Erie-area on Fox Sports Radio AM 1330 The FAN or online at ottershockey.com.
