Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors dropped a 1-0 decision via the shootout to the Erie Otters this afternoon at the Hershey Centre. The loss drops the Majors to 37-13-4-2 on the season.
It had appeared that the Majors won the game in the dying seconds of the third period, after the game was deadlocked at 0-0. Tim Billingsley dumped the puck deep into the Erie end. Otters goaltender Adam Courchaine attempted to freeze the puck against the side of the goal but it came loose and Riley Brace collected it for the Majors. Brace then passed out front to a streaking Devante Smith-Pelly, who put the shot into the open net and sending the crowd into frenzy. The players huddled in celebration as the play went under a lengthy booth review. After several minutes it was determined that time had expired before the puck crossed the line resulting in no goal and forcing overtime.
Overtime solved nothing and the teams went to the shootout. The first two shooters for each team failed in their attempts. Jordan Mayer and Devante Smith-Pelly for Mississauga while Greg McKegg and Mike Cazzola missed for Erie. William Wallen was the third shooter for the Majors and Courchaine just got a piece of Wallen's shot to keep it 0-0. Derek Holden was the third shooter for Erie and his low shot beat Chris Carrozzi and handed Erie their first road win of 2010. Both goaltenders earned a shutout for their efforts, while Courchaine took the win stopping 37 shots for Erie. Carrozzi made 28 saves and records the loss for the Majors.
Mississauga will now hit the road for four straight including three next weekend. On Thursday the Majors will travel to Windsor to face the Spitfires at 7:00 p.m. From there they will head south of the border to Plymouth on Friday night to play the Whalers and finally to Saginaw on Saturday night to face the Spirit. The Majors will return home on Friday February 25th to host the Brampton Battalion at 7:30 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets contact the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1.
Notes: The Majors honoured alumnus Leonard "Red" Kelly before the game by retiring the Hockey Hall of Famer's number '3' jersey to the rafters alongside Dave Keon. Kelly played for the Majors from 1945 to 1947 and won the 1946-1947 Memorial Cup with the Majors. There was also a post game ceremony honouring Flag Day, and the Canadian Flag. The jerseys from Friday's "Paint the Rink Pink" game are currently up for auction on ebay. Type "Paint the Rink Pink" into the search engine to go to the auction page. The jerseys went online on Friday and will be available for 10 days.
