Kane County Cougars News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars (42-36, 7-2) allowed four first-inning runs in a 6-0 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (43-36, 4-5) on Saturday night at Perfect Game Field. The Cougars were shutout for the sixth time this season. The loss ended the Cougars four-game winning streak.
It was an unfavorable beginning for Cougars' starter Ryan Weiss. After three pitches, he was in a 1-0 hole. Jacob Pearson tripled to leadoff the first. He scored on Yeltsin Encarnacion's RBI single. With the bases loaded and two outs in the opening frame, Gilberto Celestino collected a bases-clearing double to extend the Cedar Rapids edge to 4-0.
Weiss yielded an RBI ground out to Encarnacion in the second and Pearson drove in a run with a single in the fourth. Weiss (2-5) ultimately lasted five innings, but he was tagged for six runs on seven hits in a losing decision.
The Cougar offense was able to muster three hits. A runner never advanced past first base. Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Josh Winder (6-1) dazzled with eight innings of three-hit ball with no runs, no walks and eight punchouts. Winder earned the win.
Neither bullpen allowed a run in the game. Andy Toelken fired three scoreless frames for the Cougars. Brian Rapp recorded the final three outs for Cedar Rapids.
